Heading out of the city
Not only is
Manchester a thriving city with numerous attractions of
its own, but also it acts as the perfect base from which
to explore the beauty of the British countryside. If you
are planning a longer stay in the city, you might like
to visit one of the many parks in the area, such as
Dunham Massey, Tatton, and
Lyme parks, each of which
are preserved by the British National Trust, and provide
the surroundings to beautiful Georgian and Tudor stately
homes. For similar surroundings with a more industrial
feel, visit Quarry Bank Mill and
Styal Estate, where you can view heritage in
action at this working water-powered cotton mill.

National
Parks
If you’re
feeling even more adventurous, you could either hire a
car, or take the train to one of the many areas of
outstanding natural beauty, such as the Lake District,
the Peak district, or the Yorkshire Dales, all of which
are in easy reach of Manchester. These areas are ideal
both for tranquil sightseeing, beautiful views, and
quaint English villages, and for more active pursuits,
such as fell-walking and outdoor sports. For more

Surrounding
Cities
If
Manchester whets your appetite for city life, you could
visit some of the alternative cities in the northwest.
The historic cities of York, Chester, and Lancaster are
all within a couple of hours drive, and Liverpool, the
home of the Beatles, is just 25 miles away. All of these
unique cities can be reached directly by train from
Piccadilly Station.
