Regulations and criteria for the experiential internship

 

MSc (MED) GENETIC COUNSELLING  (by coursework and research report) AT University of Cape Town

 

DEGREE OFFERED: M.Sc. (Med) Course in Genetic Counseling
PREREQUISITES: B.Sc. In Biomedical Sciences, or BA in Social Work, or Psychology with basic knowledge of genetics. Some students may need to write entry exam; Alternate: MB ChB, registered nurse/midwife
CLASSES BEGIN: Monday of the second week in January each year
DURATION OF COURSE: 2 years (which includes a dissertation preferably submitted in the second year) followed by an additional one year internship.

CURRICULUM: Essential Medical Genetics 2 blocks of 40 hours; Principles and Practices of Genetic Counseling 2 blocks of 40 hours each Four main teaching blocks March/April, July/August
CLINICAL TRAINING: Clinics take place on a Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning and afternoon, Wednesday morning and afternoon and every first Thursday morning of the month and the first Friday morning of the month. They will learn skills and techniques in counselling, initially by observation and then by doing their own interviewing and counselling. They will attend a case consultation meeting that takes place on a Monday morning at noon and present their cases, informally, there too.
